I am a Computational Thinker
In this unit, the main focus is for children to master algorithms for searching, sorting and mathematics. Although computers should be used in this unit, the majority of work is done mentally, discussion and paper work. The aim is for children to start thinking like computers, using elimination and discrimination to sort and categorise. This unit should be used to deepen maths understanding. Binary code understanding needs to be addressed. Csunplugged has great lesson ideas.
I am an Explorer
In this unit children will explore local and non-local environments and use media and mapping to document the trip. GPS technology can be used to track their movements(Google Maps). They will take pictures of landmarks along their route and plot them on a geolocational map. Data can be collected along the way and analysed on site or back in the classroom. This is an ideal opportunity to teach the skills of orienteering and navigation. Trips could be arranged for this that would then link to writing about their explorations.
